All of our products are made of the finest quality wood, and materials that are available, and we know how happy you'll be with your 607 Wood Shop purchase. With the proper care, your purchase can last for generations, but over time, it'll need a little help from you. Here's what we recommend.
Hand Wash Only
To avoid bacteria, it's important that you wash your cutting board immediately after use. Never submerge your cutting board in water. Use hot soapy water and wipe the cutting board down, rinse with hot water only and wipe dry with a clean dish towel. Always store your cutting board in a dry area. DO NOT place your cutting board in the dishwasher.
Disinfect and Deodorize
We recommend filling a spray bottle with white vinegar to disinfect and deodorize your cutting boards. Simply spray the cutting board and let it sit for a few minutes. Wipe it down with a damp warm cloth.
Combine 2 tablespoons of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of salt and 3 tablespoons of hot water and mix. when a paste forms simply spread it over your cutting board and scrub the entire surface. Wipe the cutting board clean with a warm wet cloth and then with a clean dry dish towel. Bear in mind that too much salt can scratch the cutting board, so don't go overboard with this step.
Cutting Board Finish
Every few months, your cutting board will need a coat of oil or wax that will help it seal out moisture, prevent bacteria, enhance the colors of the board, and prevent the decay of the wood. While there are many products out there which you can use, we suggest keeping it simple. Why spend gobs and gobs of money when you don't have to? A generous application of food grade mineral oil will do the job, but we suggest you use our personal blend. Our 607 Shop Butter is an aromatic mixture of mineral oil, and beeswax, blended in a easily spreadable paste, which we have found is PERFECT for this purpose. And at a fraction of the cost of the brand name butcher block conditioners, we think you'll find our Shop Butter to be all that you need.
When your board starts to show its age, and the knife marks are becoming too visible, your board will need to be sanded again. This is not difficult, and with average use, only needs to be done every few years. We recommend the use of a "palm sander" or a "random orbital sander", however, not everyone owns these, and you absolutely can do it by hand. You might just be more tired afterwards. We suggest using at least 3 different sandpaper grits to bring back your board's sheen and velvet finish. You'll want to start with 150 grit sandpaper, and sand the whole board. You should hand sand the edges, and corners, and make sure you're providing equal pressure as you move across the board. When you have completed this step, you'll then move up to 220 grit sandpaper, and repeat the process. You could stop here, but don't you want the board to look like it did when it was brand new?! If you do, you'll want to wet a rag with water, and rub it all over the board. The idea is to coat the whole board in water, and raise up that freshly sanded grain. The board doesn't need to be swimming, but make sure you wet the whole thing. When it dries, you'll repeat your sanding steps with 320 grit sandpaper. This will give you a super smooth finish on the boards, and ensure that it'll keep it's smooth finish the next time you wash the board. Now go cover it in a few coats of our 607 Shop Butter, and you'll be on your way again.
